An orphaned OST can become a problem when an Exchange or Microsoft 365 account is removed, disabled, reconfigured, or disconnected from the original Outlook profile. Outlook may then fail to open the cached mailbox even though the OST file is still present on the computer.

This is particularly relevant during employee offboarding, account replacement, Exchange migrations, or computer upgrades. If the original account cannot be recreated, trying to access the OST through the normal Outlook workflow may not be practical. Before deleting the old file, it is better to determine whether useful mailbox data remains inside it.
