I have several old PST files that I need to inspect, but Outlook is not installed on the computer where the files are currently stored. I mainly need to check the emails and attachments inside them rather than configure a complete Outlook profile.

I first considered installing Outlook just for this purpose, but that seems unnecessary if there is another way to access the contents of a PST file. Some of these files are from older systems, so I am also not sure whether they will open correctly with a newer Outlook installation.

While looking for options, I came across SysInfo PST Viewer. It appears to be designed for opening and viewing PST files without requiring Outlook. What interests me most is the ability to inspect mailbox folders and email content before deciding whether the data needs to be migrated or exported.

For anyone who has worked with archived PST files, what should I check when selecting a viewer? I would ideally like to see folders such as Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and custom folders, along with the messages stored inside them.

Another concern is attachments. Some of the PST files contain emails with important documents and images. A viewer that allows attachments to be previewed would be much more useful than one that only displays basic email headers.

I am specifically looking for a PST file viewer that can work independently of Outlook. It would also be useful if the software could handle large PST files without requiring the mailbox to be imported into another application first.

Has anyone used a dedicated PST viewer for inspecting old archives? I would also like to know whether such tools make any changes to the original PST file during the viewing process. Since these are archived files, I want to keep the source data untouched.

The main reason for avoiding Outlook is that I only need occasional access to these archives. Installing and configuring an email client for every PST file seems excessive when the requirement is simply to browse and inspect the stored data.

If there is a reliable way to open PST file without Outlook, I would appreciate recommendations based on actual usage.
