Exporting your Google Photos library straight to an external hard drive is a smart move, especially if you want a physical backup that doesn't depend on any cloud service staying around forever. The process itself is pretty straightforward: you'll want to use Google Takeout to export your library as zip files, then move those files directly onto your external drive once they've downloaded. The part people often get wrong is downloading everything to a computer's internal storage first without checking if there's enough free space, since large libraries can easily add up to tens or even hundreds of gigabytes. It's a good idea to plan ahead by choosing a reasonable file size limit during export (so you're dealing with manageable chunks instead of one giant file), and downloading directly to a folder that's synced or easily transferable to your external drive. Once everything's downloaded, extracting the zip files directly onto the external drive, rather than extracting locally and then copying over, can save time and avoid unnecessary duplicate storage use on your computer. If you want a full breakdown of the export and transfer process, including tips on managing file sizes and organizing everything once it lands on your drive, this guide on how to download all photos from Google Photos covers it all in detail.

If the objective is to transfer old Outlook Express emails to Microsoft Outlook then the conversion of the DBX files to PST is the way to go. Most people will find this when they upgrade to a newer PC or find an old backup of Outlook Express that Outlook cannot open directly.

A manual method is possible but usually requires Outlook Express to be installed and working, which isn't easy on modern Windows versions. If the original setup is lost or the DBX files are corrupted then the manual process becomes difficult often.

In that situation, I used GainTools DBX to PST Converter. It let me load the DBX files, choose where to save the output, and create a PST while keeping my folders and attachments in place. It also worked with a fairly large mailbox without any unexpected issues.

One suggestion: always keep a copy of the original DBX files before starting any conversion. That gives a safe backup if something doesn't go as planned. Hopefully this helps if you're trying to access old Outlook Express emails again.

When emails may be needed later as evidence or permanent records, preserving the complete message is just as important as creating a PDF copy.
Start by making a backup of the original Thunderbird MBOX file. I tried saving emails manually at first, but it only worked for a small mailbox. Once the number of emails increased, exporting each message separately became slow and checking attachments afterward took extra effort.
After comparing both approaches, I decided to switch to TrustVare MBOX to PDF Converter because it is more practical for converting an entire mailbox instead of handling emails one by one. Additionally, it provides a preview and bulk processing feature that helped me a lot to quickly & accurately convert MBOX to PDF without any compatibility issues.
After the conversion, review a few PDF files instead of storing everything immediately. Confirm that the email headers, dates, message content and attachments are available so the archived records are complete.
